Reuters has just dropped a rumor that could be groundbreaking if confirmed! Reportedly, Sony Group Corporation is seeking to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, the company that owns the development team FromSoftware. According to the report, negotiations are already quite advanced, with a formal agreement (i.e., signatures) potentially happening as soon as next week.
Currently, Sony Corporation holds a small stake in Kadokawa, just 2%, while it owns about 14% of FromSoftware. Reuters has also sought confirmation from the parties involved: Sony has chosen to stay silent, while Kadokawa issued a brief “no comment,” indirectly confirming that negotiations are progressing.
If this acquisition goes through, PlayStation would not only add one of the most beloved development teams (FromSoftware) to its roster but also gain control over major IPs such as Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Armored Core, and Sekiro.
This implies that new installments of Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Elden Ring may only be released on PlayStation platforms (potentially also on PC) moving forward.
Additionally, acquiring Kadokawa would bring other studios under Sony’s wing, including Spike Chunsoft, ACQUIRE, and Gotcha Gotcha Games.
