Although Metal Gear is one of the most renowned franchises in gaming and its protagonist is one of the most iconic, Konami has begun to worry that younger generations of gamers might start to forget the series; this concern led them to develop Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
In an interview featured in issue 46 of Play, series producer Noriaki Okamura openly discussed how many younger gamers are not very familiar with Metal Gear, stating that:
“One of the reasons that pushed us to create the remake is that we realized many players of the new generation are no longer familiar with the Metal Gear series.”
Since Hideo Kojima exited the scene back in 2015 (the year of The Phantom Pain), there has only been Survive in 2018, which is a non-canonical spin-off and quite different from the main series.
For Okamura, Delta aims to evoke nostalgia for “older” players who experienced the series in past decades, while also ensuring the legacy of the franchise continues to resonate with future gamers.
“It was our mission, our duty, to ensure the series continues to live on for future generations. After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say… But once again, who is Solid Snake?”
It’s also worth noting that chronologically, the events of Snake Eater occur earlier in the storyline, making it an ideal title to kick off the remake, as Okamura himself points out:
“That’s where the original story began.”
Keep in mind that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but it currently does not have a release date. Finally, just a few days ago, a new video was released as part of the Legacy Series featuring David Hayter, the voice of Naked Snake.
