MediaTek Intends to Present its AI Server Chips

MediaTek is ready to develop its own AI server chips, with ARM architecture and cutting-edge features on TSMC’s 3 nm node. MediaTek is one of the chip manufacturers that has decided to make its way into the artificial intelligence markets. In previous reports, it was said that the company was building a chip dedicated to the “AI PC” segment in collaboration with NVIDIA, a competitor of the Snapdragon X Elite line. However, MediaTek now seems intent on experimenting with the “professional side” of the artificial intelligence markets: a new report states that the company is developing its own AI server chips, collaborating with companies like TSMC and ARM to offer a phenomenal product. The Taiwan Economic Daily reports that MediaTek is preparing to launch its line of AI server chips, which will likely be built on the ARM architecture. This means that MediaTek could be one of the first companies to offer AI server chips using the ARM platform. In addition, it has been reported that MediaTek intends to use TSMC’s 3 nm process, which means that the company’s offerings will be truly very valuable. Given NVIDIA’s clamor in the markets, how could MediaTek compete with the existing offerings?

MediaTek’s AI server chip will not address the high-end segment of the market, but will rather focus on the mid-to-low performance range. Demand for this particular segment is increasing massively, as many companies are engaged in the race for artificial intelligence, including startups that do not require high-end solutions from companies like NVIDIA. Thanks to its low-power architecture, MediaTek expects to attract the attention of cloud service providers (CSPs) in the industry, such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta. Regarding the production schedule, it is expected that MediaTek’s chip will reach the “tape out” phases by the first half of 2025, with the start of small-volume shipments by the second half of 2024. Mass production is expected for 2026, but this depends on market demand and interest in the segment as a whole. MediaTek has not yet managed to present a relevant product for artificial intelligence, but given the way the company is proceeding, it won’t be long before MediaTek emerges as a mainstream chip competitor.
