PlayStation 5 sells as much as PS4, Sony also reveals the numbers for Astro Bot

We are currently in the middle of shareholder meetings and financial results sharing, and Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to release the sales data for its main hardware, the PlayStation 5.

In the most recent quarter, specifically Q2 of the current fiscal year (July-September 2024), 3.8 million gaming platforms were sold, bringing the total to 65.5 million units sold worldwide. These numbers are very close to those of the PlayStation 4 sold during the same time frame, which was 67.7 million consoles. Thus, at this point, PS4 is ahead of PS5 by 2.2 million consoles sold, but the recently launched PlayStation 5 Pro could provide the extra boost needed to surpass the old-gen platform.

Additionally, during Q2, the following were sold on PlayStation 5:

  • 77.7 million software titles (games) compared to 53.6 million sold in the previous quarter
  • 5.3 million first-party titles (from the aforementioned 77.7 million) against 6 million sold in Q1
  • Of these sales, 70% came from digital sales, while in Q1, digital sales accounted for 80%

Moreover, Sony also shared the sales figures for Astro Bot. Since its release on PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024, Team Asobi’s action-platformer has sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, a figure that met the company’s expectations, though after the game’s success, we definitely anticipated a significantly higher number of units sold.
