On September 10, Sony held a livestream announcing, as expected, the PlayStation 5 Pro. In the approximately 9-minute video, which you can watch at the bottom of the article, Lead Architect Mark Cerny discussed the features that will enhance the new version of the console, based on three key pillars: Larger CPU, Advanced Ray-Tracing, and AI-Driven Upscaling. The video showcases a comparison of games between the two console versions: the standard and the new Pro. At the end, the release date and price were revealed: it will be available from November 7, 2024, priced at 799.99 euros.
Below are a series of images of the new version.
Here are the details as stated in the PlayStation Blog post:
- Updated GPU: with PS5 Pro, there is a GPU with 67% more compute units compared to the current PS5, and 28% faster memory. Overall, this allows for up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
- Advanced Ray Tracing: even more powerful ray tracing has been added, providing more dynamic light reflection and refraction. This allows rays to be projected at double, and sometimes triple, the speed of the current PS5.
- AI-Driven Upscaling: they are also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling technology that uses machine learning to deliver crystal-clear image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
Additional enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can be applied to over 8,500 backwards-compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature can stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games. The Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games feature is also available, which improves the resolution of certain PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories that support this standard. Games will also support VRR and 8K.
Moreover, many games will be patched with free software updates to allow players to take advantage of the PS5 Pro features. Titles include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
The package will include a 2 TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom with every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the Disc Drive separately for the currently available PS5.
