After making a big splash at the Opening Night Live of Gamescom, Gearbox seized the moment at PAX West to reveal the first artwork for Borderlands 4. During the ongoing event in Seattle, which wrapped up September 2nd, the developers have shared four images that provide a glimpse—albeit a vague one—of the new game environments.
Of course, Gearbox wasn’t ready to reveal too much just yet. The only hints about the highly anticipated game coming next year on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S come from those images. Based on what we’ve seen, Borderlands 4 promises a wider variety of scenarios to explore, from a neon-lit city to industrial valleys and secret rooms… it seems there’s plenty to get excited about.
Adam May, the art director for the game, talked about the images below. “The universe of Borderlands 4 is super interesting. There’s a lot to play with. It’s a post-apocalyptic world, but in a very distant future. This offers a ton of opportunities to imagine technologies, weapons, characters, and the world in general.”
May continued to describe the project as an opportunity for Gearbox to experiment with many things that were previously impossible. No specifics were shared on that front, but the confidence in its success is palpable when the director claims: “It’s going to be our best game ever.”
