LEGO Super Mario: Unveiled New Set at San Diego Comic-Con

To celebrate the first day of the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the LEGO Group announced the fifth addition to the LEGO Super Mario line for adults and welcomed the fan-favorite character, Yoshi, with a set paying homage to his first appearance as he takes Mario on an adventure.

This is the first time fans will see Mario’s trusty sidekick, Yoshi, in the form of 2D LEGO bricks. The LEGO Super Mario Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi (71438) set is a tribute to the classic Nintendo video game, Super Mario World, and is built in multiple layers to allow for captivating animation effects. Nostalgic images from the first generation of Super Mario games are also reflected in the new set, featuring the pixelated characters of Mario and Yoshi.

Carl Merriam, Senior Designer of LEGO Super Mario, explained: “In this model, we wanted to capture the original sprite animation (2D, ed.) of Super Mario World. That meant recreating the pixel art using LEGO bricks and then adding a mechanism to make Yoshi run with Mario disguised riding on his back. And if that wasn’t fun enough, we also added a lever to make Yoshi’s tongue go in and out, just like in the game!”.

Once built, the set can also serve as a beautiful display piece. The model, like The Mighty Bowser and the Piranha Plant from the LEGO Super Mario line, is part of the “Adults Welcome” series. This range is designed to provide wonderful memories for all LEGO fans who experienced Super Mario as an essential part of their childhood.

The new set is available for pre-order starting today through LEGO.com and will be available from October 1, 2024 at LEGO Stores, LEGO.com, and select major retailers worldwide.
